AMG offers a range of High Purity Degassed (‘HPD’) briquettes for applications where purity is of the utmost importance. With a minimum chromium level of of 99.75%, we control elements such as S, O, N and C to extremely tight levels; firstly during the selection of raw materials for the exothermic reaction and secondly by treating the briquettes in a vacuum furnace to further reduce gases and other impurities. Ultimately, these briquettes are used in superalloys destined for some of the world’s most demanding applications, including single-crystal alloys for jet engine turbine blades.
Our ULS (Ultra-Low Sulphur) briquettes provide an even greater level of purity; customers can expect sulphur levels of 5ppm max, achieved by hydrogen-reduction furnacing under vacuum.
Nitrided chrome from AMG is particularly well suited for use in alloys destined for medical implants: cobalt-based alloys produced with nitrided chrome have exceptional resistance to corrosion and wear in use.
For our low nitrogen special degassed grades (SD25 and SD50) we select the optimal mix of raw materials to produce the desired chemistry, before further processing the chrome to reduce nitrogen content to levels of 50ppm and 25ppm, according to individual customer specification.
Our HPD briquettes and low-nitrogen chrome products are used in the manufacture of vacuum induction melted superalloys for use in the following market sectors:
- Single crystal alloys for aircraft air foils
- Aircraft engine components
- Superalloys for power generation, e.g. nuclear
Land-based turbines - Medical implants (joints, pacemakers and dental)
- Automotive
