Chromium metal (typically 99.5% purity) is a critical material in the manufacture of superalloys. Chrome metal, when used in superalloys, increases resistance to heat and corrosion and offers superior mechanical properties even when under pressure and at elevated temperatures. That makes chrome metal, and the superalloys it enhances, the material of choice in some extremely challenging environments.
As a general rule, the higher the chromium content in a superalloy, the higher the resistance to attack; be that by heat, oxidation or fatigue. It is also used in conjunction with other alloying elements such as molybdenum, tungsten and niobium to improve corrosion resistance, as well as to de-magnetise nickel and nickel-iron alloys.
A typical next-generation passenger aircraft contains around 250kgs of chromium metal, found in a variety of superalloys according to the application. Engines and exhausts (disks, blades, tailpipes) are the primary uses where their heat, corrosion and creep resistance at very high temperatures (over 1,000°C ) is essential, however they are also found in high-speed parts such as aircraft wheels as well as in heat-resistant bolts, fasteners and casings. Superalloys in the aircraft industry contain around 18-20% chrome metal consumed.

Cr-Ni based superalloys are extensively used in power generation. Whilst their corrosion-resistance means that they continue to play a part in deep-sea drilling environments, they are also at the forefront of clean energy technologies such as nuclear, where their presence in valves and vapour tubes require mechanical resistance to constant high temperature and high pressure. They are also used in gas turbine blades and in turbochargers and be capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 1300°C. Superalloys used in the power generation industry contain between 18-28% Cr content.
Chrome metal therefore is essential in some of the world’s most demanding products and applications and is helping to solve some of the planet’s most pressing environmental concerns. AMG Chrome is a world leader in its production.
